my design phisophy is simple(as you may be able to tell.)
i enjoy a clean look, free of distractions and clutter. I don't like my websites to look like templates, or page parks. i value originality, character and design that not only compliments the attitude and ideas of your company, but personifies it.
my design process goes like this:
i meet with you and discuss the terms of our arrangement, then i ask you to tell me as much as possible about your company, what you do and why you think people should chose your company over your competitors. i try to meet as much of your staff as possible, because i believe a company/organization is a group of humans working towards a goal- which means that the people within it are going to have the greatest influence on the product released.
i then ask you to provide me with a few websites you like, and at least two of them need to be in your industry, one outside of your industry (but you still like it) and one that you see as "high-end" or "expensive. i also need any current branding you might have (business cards, flyers, etc.)
after i get all the materiels from you, i usually build 3 design compositions in three different styles. i don't have a set way i go about this because every company is different. for a legal firm, i probally won't come up with a "rock star" theme (unless you settle a lot of cases for rock stars...), and for a trendy clothing store i wouldn't bring you something suitable for a moving company (unless you primarily sell clothing to trendy movers.)
after i provide you with the three designs (i will usually bring them to you, and then we will go over them. then you get a major round of revisions, such as "i like this design but i like that design's color scheme, and the third design's navigation structure". i'll go back, switch and swap things around and then bring you back the finished product. you get one further round of tweaks- "make our name bigger, our phone number up higher and our font should be less blue".
once the tweaks are done, i'll finalize the design- and this is the last time you get to change things until the webpage is complete (unless you want to, but then i have to bill you more hours.)
i'll spend two to three days coding the design, giving the site it's front page and subpage templates, and the design process is complete! where we go from there is up to you.
